San Roque Multipurpose Project Achieves Historic Hydropower Sustainability Standard Certification

San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC) proudly announces a historic achievement as the San Roque Multipurpose Project (SRMP) was awarded a Hydropower Sustainability Standard Silver Certification from the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance on December 10, 2024 for meeting over 30% of the Advanced Requirements of each of the Standard’s ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) topics.
This certification marks a groundbreaking milestone for SRMP as the first hydropower plant in the Philippines and Southeast Asia awarded with the Hydropower Sustainability Standard Certification, solidifying SRPC’s position as a trailblazer in sustainable energy development.
Hydropower Sustainability Standard
The Hydropower Sustainability Standard is managed by the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance, an international non-profit organization that promotes transparency in the hydropower sector through its rigorous sustainability certification system that involves twelve (12) hydropower performance requirements: Environmental and Social Assessment and Management, Labour and Working Conditions, Water Quality and Sediments, Community Impacts and Infrastructure Safety, Resettlement, Biodiversity and Invasive Species, Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Heritage, Governance and Procurement, Communications and Consultation, Hydrological Resource, and Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience.
Tommy T. Valdez, SRPC’s Vice President for Corporate Affairs, said “this milestone is a reflection of our steadfast commitment in addressing the challenges we faced during the construction of the SRMP, particularly concerns related to environmental impacts and involuntary resettlement. Through innovative solutions and focused collaboration, we have transformed these challenges into opportunities for sustainable development, setting a benchmark for the hydropower industry.”
The SRMP, one of the Philippines’ largest infrastructure projects, has faced its share of challenges during its development. However, jointly with the government, the National Power Corporation, and SRPC worked tirelessly to address these issues, implementing measures to protect the environment and ensure social responsibility. This certification validates those efforts and highlights SRMP’s role as a model for sustainable hydropower.
The Hydropower Sustainability Standard Certification not only affirms SRPC’s leadership in sustainable practices but also paves the way for a greener, more resilient future for the Philippines. With this achievement, SRPC remains committed to setting new standards for sustainability and innovation in the hydropower sector.
