Unveiling of FVR Marker and Launching of First SRMP Reservoir Boat
The San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC) unveiled the Fidel V. Ramos marker located at the right side of
the San Roque dam overlooking the reservoir on March 12 with former President Fidel V. Ramos as the
guest of honor. Mr. Ramos was joined by officials from the government, business sectors and non-
government organizations.
The SRPC management presented the marker to FVR in appreciation of his political will in implementing
the San Roque Multipurpose Project (SRMP) during his term as the President of the Republic of the
Philippines. According to Mr. Ryukichi Kawaguchi, SRPC President and CEO, “I believe he deserves this
acknowledgement from us as he has been very helpful and extremely instrumental in every aspect of
the project. We are grateful for what he has done not only for the SRPC but to the people of
Pangasinan, Benguet and the whole country.”
The marker will also serve as a lasting monument to remind people of the purposes of the SRMP:
irrigation, power generation, flood attenuation and water quality improvement.
It was on May 2, 1997 when then President Ramos led the ground breaking ceremonies that kicked off the construction of the SRMP until its completion in May 2002. The project is now on its 9th year of
operation with 100% reliability and efficiency. It contributes to the sufficiency of electric power in the
Luzon grid and at times may supply power needs in the Visayas and Mindanao areas as may be
dispatched by NPC. The project also provides sufficient water for irrigation to about 15,000 hectares of
farmlands downstream of Agno River. It helps attenuate floods during typhoons in 17 municipalities
downstream of San Roque Dam and is an effective facility in improving water quality.
On the other hand, the launching of the First Reservoir Boat marks the opening of a potential tourism
activity that the former president also initiated. Pending the full study of the tour features, the boat will
serve to cater to the reservoir transport needs for the performance of environmental studies and compliance monitoring activities.
